SECTION A
AFRICAN PROSE
Answer one question only from this section.
BUCHI, EMECHETA: Second Class Citizen
1. How does Mr. Noble become a landlord?
Mr. Noble becomes a landlord through Adah's financial support, his own hard work, smart property investments, ambition for social mobility, and the income from renting out his properties.
Mr. Noble benefits from Adah's hard work and financial support in the early years of their marriage. Her contributions help him save money and create opportunities for future success.
Over time, Mr. Noble works hard and begins to earn his own money. This growing financial stability helps him plan for bigger goals, like owning property.
Mr. Noble makes smart choices and starts buying property. He gradually builds his wealth through these investments, aiming for better living standards.
Mr. Noble uses his ambition to rise above his limited starting point in life. By seizing opportunities and being determined, he moves up in society
Once he owns property, Mr. Noble rents it out to others. This steady income gives him financial security and boosts his status.
2. Examine the experiences of Nigerian migrants in London in the novel.
In Second Class Citizen, Nigerian migrants in London, like Adah, deal with feeling out of place, racism, money problems, unfair treatment because of gender, and loneliness as they try to make a better life.
Adah faces racism in London, where people treat her as less important because she is Nigerian and Black. She often feels left out and judged by the British society.
When Adah moves to London, she has a hard time finding good jobs and earns very little money. She has to work in low-paying jobs while taking care of her family, which makes life very tough.
Adah feels torn between her Nigerian culture and the British way of life. She struggles to hold on to her roots while trying to fit into the new society.
As a woman, Adah faces extra challenges in London, especially from her husband, who expects her to follow traditional gender roles. She feels trapped by these expectations while trying to be independent.
Despite many struggles, Adah stays strong and works hard to improve her life. She learns to be independent and take control of her future, showing her strength as a migrant woman.
ALEX, AGYEI-AGYIRI: Unexpected Joy at Dawn
3. How do Marshak's experiences contribute to the development of the plot?
Marshak's struggles, choices, relationship with Joy, search for who he is, and self-forgiveness all help move the story forward and bring it to a resolution.
Marshak struggles with his feelings of guilt and loss, which causes him to reflect deeply on his past. For example, his emotional struggles with his father's death and his own failures push him to change, helping to drive the plot as he works toward healing.
Marshak's decision to confront his past and his relationship with Joy cause changes in the story. For instance, when Marshak chooses to meet with Joy and face his past, it creates a turning point that forces him to confront unresolved issues and drives the plot forward.
Marshak's relationship with Joy is central to his personal growth and the plot. His changing dynamic with Joy, especially when they share vulnerable moments, forces him to question his beliefs, helping the story progress through emotional shifts.
Marshak's struggle to understand who he really is, especially his need to reconcile his past with his present, is key to the plot. For example, when Marshak begins to reflect on his cultural roots and how they affect his identity, it shapes his actions and decisions throughout the story.
Marshak's emotional growth leads him to accept his past and make peace with it. For instance, in the climax, when he is finally able to forgive himself for past mistakes, it resolves the main emotional conflict and leads to a satisfying conclusion.
4. Consider Mama Orojo as a woman of substance.
Mama Orojo is a woman of substance because she is strong, caring, wise, honest, and a positive influence on others.
Mama Orojo is strong and does not give up easily, even when life is hard. She faces many challenges, but she always keeps going with courage and determination.

Even though she may not hold a formal title, Mama Orojo is a leader in her community. People listen to her because of the respect they have for her kindness, wisdom, and strong character.
SECTION B
NON-AFRICAN PROSE
Answer one question only from this section.
RALPH, ELLISON: Invisible Man
5. Examine the significance of 'the Brotherhood' in the novel.
The Brotherhood in Invisible Man represents false promises, manipulation, hidden racism, the narrator's disappointment, and the dangers of extreme ideas that ignore people's real needs.
The Brotherhood tells the narrator it will help fight for racial equality, making him feel important. But in reality, they use him for their own goals and don't care about his true identity or needs.
The Brotherhood manipulates the narrator by making him follow their cause instead of his own beliefs. They take away his freedom to think and act as an individual, using him as a tool for their agenda.
Even though the Brotherhood claims to fight for equality, it still treats Black people poorly and ignores their real struggles. This shows how racism can hide in organizations that seem like they want to help.
At first, the narrator joins the Brotherhood with hope, thinking he can make a difference. But as he experiences their betrayal and mistreatment, he realizes that they don't care about him or his people, leading to his awakening.
The Brotherhood becomes so focused on their own ideas that they forget about the people they claim to help. This shows how extreme ideologies can hurt individuals by ignoring their real needs in favor of the group's power.
6. How does Dr. Bledsoe exhibit deception?
Dr. Bledsoe tricks others by pretending to help while actually only caring about keeping his own power.
Dr. Bledsoe acts like he cares about the narrator and wants to help him succeed. But in reality, he only helps the narrator to get rid of him and keep his own power at the college.
Dr. Bledsoe pretends to be loyal to white people and does what they expect, even if it hurts black people. He knows that by playing along with their ideas, he can keep his position of power.
Dr. Bledsoe tricks the narrator into thinking he's being helped. He tells him to go to New York, but it's actually just a way to get rid of him while making it look like he's being kind.
Dr. Bledsoe tries to act like the perfect black man in front of white people. He says that black people need to follow white expectations to survive, but he's just using this idea to stay in control and keep his job.
Dr. Bledsoe only cares about his own power and will do anything to keep it. He uses deception to make white people think he's helping the college, while he's actually only helping himself.
EMILY, BRONTE: Wuthering Heights
7. Explore the themes of love and hatred in the novel.
In Wuthering Heights, love and hatred are closely connected, causing harm, repeating in families, affected by class, and lasting even after death.
Heathcliff's love for Catherine is so strong that it hurts both of them. His obsession with her makes him act cruelly and destroy many lives, including his own.
When Catherine marries Edgar, Heathcliff feels betrayed and rejected, so he becomes full of hatred. This hatred makes him hurt others, especially Edgar, as a way of getting revenge.
The love and hatred between Heathcliff and Catherine affects their children, Hareton and Cathy. Just like their parents, the new generation struggles with these same feelings, repeating the cycle.
Catherine marries Edgar because of his wealth and status, not because of love. Heathcliff hates Edgar and their marriage because of the class differences that get in the way of his love for Catherine.
Even after Catherine dies, her ghost haunts Heathcliff because their love and hatred never end. This shows that love and hatred are so powerful that they last even beyond death.
8. Assess Isabella's relationship with Heathcliff.
Isabella's relationship with Heathcliff starts with love but quickly becomes painful because he is cruel and doesn't care about her.
Isabella falls in love with Heathcliff because he seems exciting and mysterious. But he doesn't really like her; he just wants to hurt her brother.
After they marry, Heathcliff is very mean to Isabella. He doesn't treat her with love or kindness, and this makes her very unhappy.
Isabella soon realizes that Heathcliff never loved her. She feels sad and disappointed when she sees he only married her to get back at her brother.
Isabella decides to leave Heathcliff because she can't stand how he treats her. She goes to London to try and find a better life away from him.
Heathcliff doesn't care about how much he hurts Isabella. Even when she leaves him, he doesn't feel bad at all.
